A Closer Look at Card Publisher Heidi Nicole
In our latest industry interview, we’re talking to Heidi Nicole Gillett from Heidi Nicole.
Tell us a little about yourself and your company?
From a young age, I have always been creative, whether it was painting, drawing or making; I was always doing something. After graduating in Interior Architecture, I was at a loss for what to do with all my free time. I have made my own cards for friends and family for a long time, so decided to create my own range. I am selling on Not on the High Street, which is a great community of interesting products and sellers. I am also selling in an independent shop in my hometown of Thame, Oxfordshire, called ‘From’, which sells items which are locally made/crafted within a 20-mile radius of the shop.
Describe your typical working day …
The day starts at my computer with a cup of tea. After checking emails, I then make up any orders I have received and head to the local post office. After that, the day varies from working on new designs, making up stock, designing my Christmas Market stalls and taking my two dogs for a walk.
What is the best thing about your job?
I gain such a sense of satisfaction from being able to create products inspired by my imagination.

What is your personal favourite product in your collection?
I really like the ‘Checklist Card’. Being very close with my brother and dad, I know it would appeal to their sense of humour to receive such a card, as it is stereotypically the perfect card for males to give to others. I am also willing for the males out there to take a chance on giving this card to their mother, sister, girlfriend, wife… as it slightly pushes the boundaries with what is typical/expected by females. In other words, will she see the funny side of it?!
What are the most popular products in your range?
I would probably say the ‘Don’t Hate’ Birthday card, I think it really identifies with those with a similar sense of humour to me.
What are you working on at the moment?
I am putting the final touches to a range of typographic prints and a number of notebook designs. I am also looking to branch out from paper based products to fabric based products such as tea towels and linen bags. I have been designing patterns which have a tribal feel about them, which I am drawn to as a source of inspiration.
What do you have planned for 2013?
I want to learn more skills and techniques including screen printing and letterpress. I hope these skills will enable me to broaden my product range.
What inspires your products?
I am inspired by a mixture of my imagination and the world around me. It’s the little things that catch my attention, from the texture of a surface, to the feeling a particular word evokes. The card ‘You + Me = Extraordinary’ is an example of this, the word ‘extraordinary’ is so rarely used in its truest meaning. The word just captures a multitude of emotions for me.
What other cards and gift designers do you admire?
I have recently discovered the company Sugar Paper, from Los Angeles. I think their work is beautiful and refined, and I absolutely love their envelope inserts, such a lovely finishing touch.
What current or upcoming trend are you’re coveting?
I love Kraft card, especially when it is used with white ink which creates a beautiful contrast.

My niece was watching Chitty Chitty Bang Bang recently – you can’t beat a classic.
What’s your favourite album/band or song? All 3 if you want!
At the moment, it has to be Babel by Mumford & Sons, my favourite song on the album is Below My Feet.

Pinterest, it’s such a great tool to see what else is out there for anything and everything.
