Take a Look Behind the Scenes of Say It

Say hello to …

Laura Pyke from Say It.

Tell us a little about yourself and your company?

I live in the East Riding of Yorkshire and have enjoyed making things for many years. Just over a year ago I decided to turn my hobby into a business and set up Say It, a little shop selling my handmade cards, stationery and jewellery. I love getting post, and despite all the amazing advances in technology it’s still the best way of hearing from people in my opinion. Say It encourages people to send a card or little gift to say what they want to say.

Describe your typical working day …

I usually start work about 10am, checking emails and setting up any advertising for the day and scheduling twitter posts etc. Then it depends what orders I’ve got in or events I’ve got coming up, but the rest of the day usually involves packaging up orders, preparing blog posts, researching business/marketing tips and keeping my shop up to date. I also try and make sure I have time to work on new products; at the moment it’s gift tags and new notebook designs.

What is the best thing about your job?

I love being able to work from home and fit it in around family life. I also think it’s fab that I get to do something that used to be my hobby and call it work!

Do you use any specialist techniques to create your products?

No, I’m completely self taught and I love the fact that most of my products are very simply made. I use a lot of double sided tape (I order 400m at a time!), a craft knife and cutting mat.

>The Products …

What is your personal favourite product in your collection?

It’s really tough to choose, but I think it’s probably my wedding card with three handmade polymer clay hearts. I was recently asked to adapt the design slightly for some wedding invitations and it worked really well.

What are the most popular products in your range?

My most popular products are definitely notebooks. The personalised map covered notebooks have been a favourite for quite a while, but recently the similar sheet music notebooks are catching up.

What are you working on at the moment?

I am working on a new range of Christmas gift tags at the moment; experimenting with different shapes, textures and materials for stringing them.

What do you have planned for 2013?

I am planning to take a step back and have a look at my business and where I am heading. I have so many ideas for development; I’m hoping this will help me pick one or two things to concentrate on. I think it will definitely involve a few more notebook designs though.

Inspiration …

What inspires your products?

I am inspired by the materials I have. I don’t like to throw things away, so that often gets my mind whirring about what I could make from it. I might see some fantastic ribbon, then spend a week or more pondering what I could do with it.

What other card and gift designers do you admire?

I love Bread and Jam, they have some very simple but very effective designs that often make me smile. I also really like Ritzy Swish’s greetings cards. They are so unusual and I love the materials and textures used.

Thank you Laura.
