Take a Look Behind the Scenes of Queenie’s Cards
Say hello to …
Queenie Best from Queenie’s Cards
Tell us a little about yourself and your company?
I’ve loved drawing since I could hold a crayon, and was always appreciative of receiving greeting cards to mark special occasions. In 2008, I launched Queenie’s Cards to spread the joy of paper greetings to my friends, family and anyone who likes cute and cartoony designs. I believe it is important to send handwritten messages in this technology-filled era because that personal touch makes all the difference. To further encourage this tradition, we donate proceeds of every sale to worthy causes such as Toronto Animal Services to promote local charities and organisations.
Describe your typical working day …
My everyday revolves around my little peanut’s schedule, so I pretty much only have time to design after she’s asleep at night! I sometimes get caught up drawing until 2am and I’m trying to break that habit.
What is the best thing about your job?
I am in full creative control and it is truly my dream.
Do you use any specialist techniques?
I love my Scor-It Board! I’ve tried different scoring tools but this creates the best results.
Your Products …
What is your personal favourite product in your collection?
I have to say, I’m proud of my “you’re hot sh*t” card – I give myself credit for making poop look cute!
What are the most popular products in your range?
Along with the “you’re hot sh*t” card, the top sellers throughout the year are “the perfect pair” (shown at the top of the post); one of the first designs created when the company launched in 2008. Also “I love your cheesiness”, which was created this year!
What are you working on at the moment?
Box sets! The new “Set for the Year!” packages include 8 cards that are available in five editions: Original, Girls’, Guys’, Parents’ (shown below) and Seasonal. Each edition will have cards to get you from January through to December, a one-time purchase and you’re ‘set for the year!’
What do you hope to achieve in the next year?
I hope to be in partnership with several retail establishments to allow my cards to be more accessible worldwide, and I am working on many different ideas to expand the line!
Your Inspiration …
What inspires your products?
Everyday life, puns, and my husband’s inside jokes.
What other card and gift designers do you admire?
Meg Mateo Ilasco, author of ‘Mom, Inc: The Essential Guide to Running a Successful Business Close to Home’.
What current or upcoming trend are you’re coveting?
I would love to have different product lines to include social media humour!
Thank you Queenie!
