Thought on Stationery Trends Direct from the Designers

Baker & Taylor have been in the publishing and gift stationery industry for over 25 years. Over that time we have seen many changes including the introduction of digital communication, but paper gift stationery is still flourishing and the personal touch of written cards very much remains.

Each season we never fail to be excited by the latest colour palettes and trends! Some trends seem to come and go whilst others such as vintage style and floral continue to be firm favourites.  For each range we work with artists and photographers to create eye-catching, exclusive designs. Obviously, the key to having successful designs is understanding the market and with many stationery sales being to females and often for gifting (from female to female) fashion styles and colours have a huge role to play. We take fashion trends into account when creating our ranges so that they are eye catching and blend together well. Ensuring when they are displayed in store the product tells a story. One of the big influences for fashion coming through the catwalk now is lace and this will be reflected in our forthcoming designs.

In spring this year we launched highly successful ‘Floral Spot’ and ‘Floral Rose’ collections, taking inspiration from homeware designs and colour-ways seen at the season’s interior trade shows.  In ‘Floral Spot’ the soft blues and lilacs and in ‘Floral Rose’ sumptuous wine berry and pink picked up on the colour trends, with both featuring on country style ceramics and tin-ware.

We also have some great formats that are not only pretty but also practical in the form of weekly planners, which are available now and beautiful writing sets, which will be coming in November.

For 2014 retro and vintage continue to be very strong but we have also taken inspiration from the pretty palette, celebrating natures springtime colours. Our new ranges will incorporate soft hues of rose pink, lilac, sea blue and fresh aqua green. Working with artists we have created fresh ranges from a butterfly garden and retro perfume bottles, to beautiful lace-inspired jugs of roses. These ranges have been put together to ensure that they will blend seamlessly together to support in store products such as floral teacups and teapots, retro sweetie jars and applique fabric designs, which will endorse retail themes.

In terms of formats, notecards continue to be the firm favourite but the address book is making a surprise return. Consumers are asking for somewhere to write down info rather than keeping it in a digital format so we are introducing a new address book format to meet this demand.
