Take a Look Behind the Scenes of Speak Life Greetings

Say hello to …

Robyn Short from Speak Life Greetings

Tell us a little about yourself and your company?

I am the owner of Speak Life Greetings, a Maryland-based greeting card brand that believes in the power and beauty of the printed word to provide inspiration, encouragement and endearment to the recipient.

What is the best thing about your job?

The best thing about creating my product is seeing the reaction of the recipients of the greetings. Knowing that my product brings joy to people is the best thing. The second best thing is the freedom of the medium. I can create whatever I want—no limits! Also, I’m able to combine my love of design and writing. I get to make words beautiful.

Do you use any specialist techniques?

I am definitely a typography fiend, and this comes across in a lot of my designs. I am very attentive to paper choices and printing processes because I feel that it has a big impact on the effectiveness of the overall design and the tactile experience and emotional connection with the recipient. My designs always start in the sketchbook and end up on the screen.

Your products …

What is your personal favourite product in your collection?

My favourite product is the “Joy” card. I created it not only to be a greeting card, but to be a piece of art meant to be displayed in the home. I love the way it turned out.

What are the most popular products in your range?

My most popular products have been the “Good Tidings & Great Joy” card and the “Joy” card.

What are you working on at the moment?

I’m currently working on the Christmas 2013 collection, as well as a winter notecard series.

What do you hope to achieve in the next year?

I would love to take my products to the retail level. I’m currently only selling through my website, and I would love for more people to have access to my products in stores. I’m also looking into gift wrap production.

Your inspiration …

What inspires your products?

My products are inspired by the concept that words have power. The foundation of my brand lies in Proverbs 18:21, which states: “Words kill, words give life; they’re either poison or fruit—you choose.”

What other card and gift designers do you admire?

I’ve read a lot of Kate Harper’s books. She has had a very successful career in the industry and is always
willing to share knowledge and help other up-and-coming designers like me.

What current or upcoming trend are you’re coveting?

None. I’m not trendy!

What’s your favourite card or gift brand?

I’ve always liked Mahogany, Dayspring, Papyrus and African American Expressions.

Thank you Robyn!
