Take a Closer Look at Big Little Things

Say hello to …

Tell us a little about yourself and your company?

I’m a mum of three with a passion for design and horticulture. Big Little Things was founded over three years ago by myself and business partner Sarah whilst drinking a cup of coffee and has evolved to what you see today. Our philosophy is simple; to bring original products and designs to those who are seeking them. Our own designs are handmade in-house. The Bug Little Canvases for example are all individually painted by hand in our workshop – so no canvas is exactly the same. This makes the handmade nature of our products unique. We know that the little details are a big deal, and we pay attention to that.

Describe your typical working day …

It’s not your average 9-5, and no two days ever seem to be the same! I’m quite often up at 5am responding to emails, making products or processing orders and often work late at night which enables me to do the school runs!

What is the best thing about your job?

Seeing our ideas evolve from scribbles on notepads to products that are incorporated within wedding schemes, in someone’s home or as a special gift.

Do you use any specialist techniques to create your products?

We favour traditional processes such as hand-sewing and painting by hand. Although we do use other equipment from sewing machines to screen printing! We pay a huge amount of attention to detail and take our time when creating as quality is paramount to us.

What would you like to do next with the business?

It was only last year when we re-launched our website and expanded our product portfolio to include personalised gifts and home decor, which is evolving and expanding on a daily basis and will continue to do so for some time. This year is about gaining distribution of our Bug Little Canvases into High Street boutiques and creating a high street presence. Currently we only sell online or at Craft Fairs but people continually ask if we have a shop or if they can get our products from a shop; it would be great to showcase our fab products in a retail environment!

strong>What ‘top tip’ would you give to someone starting a business?

Persevere and learn to adapt even if it takes you out of your comfort zone.

Are you working on any new products at the moment?

We’re always working on new designs, that’ll never change!

What products do you want to introduce in the next year?

We’re lucky to affiliate with other like minded people who are very talented and who want to showcase their products on our site. We are currently in discussions with a fantastic designer Maemaggie and hope to introduce a line of her prints soon.

Your Inspiration …

What inspired you to start your business?

It’s a bit of a cliché but it all stemmed from wanting to work and raise a family at the same time. So many friends commented on the things we created individually as a ‘hobby’, combining our talents seemed an avenue worth exploring!

What inspires your products?

Anything and everything. Most ideas for our hand-crafted products evolve when I’m out walking or pottering about in the garden.

What other card and gift designers / brands do you admire?

I like the fun nature of a Rufus Rabbit.

What business figures / brands inspire your business?

I admire Ben Silbermann the co-founder and visionary behind Pinterest. Social media plays such a huge part in our business and it’s a real link to our customers. I appreciate the work and efforts of all entrepreneurs and creatives. Having the foresight, belief and determination to create and pursue your dreams always gains my respect.

Thank you Fran!
