Tell us a little about your company.
The Grumble and Co. has just started out in the big world of the greeting card industry. We produce emotive and charming greeting cards. Our first range, The MugShots collection is out now.
In 2014, I left my job as a manager in the Fitness industry. I decided that I needed to go back to my roots of illustration and art after 15 years. I wasn’t feeling creative, motivated or happy in my old job. I took a life-coaching session where I revealed to myself that I wanted to work for myself, create art and be happy. It was a big decision to make to leave my full time managers position, but it had to be done. I took a part-time waiting job at a restaurant near me in the evenings, which left the daytimes for me to be able to concentrate on my new venture, The Grumble & Co.
What is your role in the business?
I am the designer and illustrator. It is great being back in control of my life and doing what I loved for such a long time as a child, to draw and imagine.
Is there anyone else in the team? Tell us about them.
My partner Ross has a keen eye for detail, and a great taste in colour. He is there when my eyes are tired to give me that honest feedback, yes or no!
What is a typical day like at your business?
A typical day begins with an early morning gym session, to get me awake and ready for the day. I am then at home in our quaint 500 year old cottage, nestled on the outskirts of Tatton Park in the beautiful town of Knutsford.
I work throughout the day and then head down to my job to the restaurant where I work in the evenings. The work balance I always wanted, I have finally achieved. It was the best decision I have ever made to leave my full time job!
My workplace is so special as I have my 4 beautiful dogs around me; 3 pugs and a miniature schnauzer. A pack of pugs is called a Grumble. What better name for our business than to name it after our 4 girls – The Grumble & Co!
What inspires which product lines you create?
My love of dogs was the first inspiration for my cards. Having 4 little ladies at home, their expressions and mannerisms have me entertained all day! This was my first inspiration for The ‘MugShots’ collection.
Tell us about your design style.
I start my designs as sketches and illustrations on paper. This I enjoy, as it takes me back to being a child where I would draw all the time. I then digitally edit my designs where I like to capture a certain element of the dogs personality. I love to use colour to bring my designs to life. I hope my designs are fun and refreshing.
Are there any other card or gift designers you admire?
I love the work of Tache Crafts. There designs are fun and quirky. They are also are an inspiration at how they have started and grown there business from the passion they have.
What is your personal favourite product in your collection?
This is my favourite design from the ‘MugShots’ collection! Scamp, a cheeky Bruxellos Griffon. He encompasses everything I want in my designs, detailed, fun and has a real character about him.
What are the most popular products in your current range?
The most popular cards so far have been our Italian Greyhound ‘Walkies’ greeting card and also our Salt and Pepper Miniature Schnauzer ‘Thank You’ card (shown at the top of the post).
I have a range of illustrations based on my handsome nephew, which I am developing and hope the collection will be called ‘Little Boy Mac’.
Do you use any specialist techniques or equipment?
All the designs are sketched by hand first. I then edit them digitally to get the exact look I want. It is important to me that the materials used should be Ec0-friendly, so we only use FSC grade board, with recycled envelopes and bio-degradable cello wrap bags.
What would you like to do next with the business?
We want to focus on really getting our feet off the ground with our greeting card collections. In the future we hope to produce beautiful Giclée prints of our designs.
Thank you Nicholas!
