A Sneak Peek Behind the Scenes of The Little Brown Rabbit.

For this week’s ‘Behind the Design interview I caught up with Emma Talbot aka The Little Brown Rabbit. Emma shared insight on her life and career as an artist, the inspiration behind her company and the unique elements behind her super cute illustrations. Take a look …

Hi Emma. Tell us a little about your company.

Hello, thanks so much for having me here. My name is Emma Talbot (aka The Little Brown Rabbit) & I’m an illustrator, painter & crafter. I was inspired to start my business in 2007 because I wanted to create things that made me happy. After a few years of working full time in the design industry I was starting to find that I couldn’t create the work I really wanted to because it wasn’t deemed commercial enough.

What is your role in the business?

Life as an artist means wearing a lot of hats! I do everything from my accounts, answering emails to creating my art. It’s taken me a long time to try and perfect a way of working which allows me to keep a balance between my creative work, all the other aspects of my business & being a full time mother.

What is a typical day like at your business?

Although I’m not really a morning person, I do try really hard to design early on in the day because if I don’t & I start answering emails for example the day whizzes by & before I know it it’s time to pick my daughter up from school.

Your Inspiration …

What inspires the product lines you create?

My inspiration seems to come from everywhere but the internet is of course an amazing resource. I do however have to set myself a time limit whilst online otherwise I get sucked in for hours!

Tell us about your design style.

I used to worry that I didn’t have a recognisable style as such & that I didn’t stick to one type of product, but now it doesn’t worry me. I know whatever I create is ‘me’ and therefore automatically has my stamp on it.

I think the one thing that does tie my work together is my love for mixed media. I love to create art which uses a variety of different mediums. Recently I’ve rediscovered my love for making again, using paper mache, found objects & material.

Are there any other card / gift designers that you admire?

There are so many designers I admire but here’s a few! Rifle Paper Co, Jessie Chorley, Laura Berger and I really like the different & quirky products you can find at Ohh Deer.

Your Products …

What is your personal favourite product in your collection?

Eeeek! I don’t think I can pick one. I think currently, my favourite products are my paper mâché bunnies & my mixed media art prints.

What are the most popular products in your current range?

My art prints are very popular with customers. I sign & date the fronts & print personalised messages on the backs which customers really love.

Manufacturing & Production.

What can you tell us about how your products are made?

I print & make everything myself. I always use environmentally friendly materials whenever possible. For my craft items I source vintage or second hand materials quite a lot. I’m like a Magpie & always on the look out for things I can use in my work!

The Future.

What would you like to do next with the business?

I will definitely be developing & exploring the craft/gift side of my business along side my illustration work, as I am currently hooked on paper mache & embroidery!
