Shining a Spotlight on Old English Company

In our final post in honour of National Stationery Week we’re taking a closer look at Old English Company, a new publisher making their mark in the world of sophisticated stationery designs.

Old English Company is the brainchild of illustrator, Ben Treanor. With a studio based in the picturesque town of Stamford, England, Ben designs stationery, greetings cards and homewares; each decorated with stylish hand-lettered designs that are proving a huge hit.

Those of you familiar with the blog will have seen glimpses of Ben’s work in the past. Since their first mention back in 2014 Old English Company has featured in several posts. From the Top Drawer Preview in 2015, to mentions of their homewares collection and both Mothering Sunday Cards and Father’s Day Greeting Cards.

Why have Old English Company made it onto the blog so often?

Well, the art of the range is in the unique simplicity of their designs. Using illustration and hand-lettered typography the company is creating stylish, uncomplicated products, with messages that resonate.

As Ben himself comments:

“I draw all the designs by hand, and so, the lettering style doesn’t really follow any particular calligraphy rules, and that’s the type of lettering I love. Just going with it to see what I come up with. As the saying goes, there is beauty in simplicity. Our designs not only encapsulates the latest trends, but they also have a clean finish. I think that’s why I’ve always been a big fan of the fresh, minimalist Scandinavian look.”

A Stationery Start-Up

Old English Company first came to light back in 2013. Initially starting as Ben’s hobby whilst he was working in London at Waterstones’ HQ as head designer/illustrator.

“Although at the time I really enjoyed designing for Waterstones, my end goal was to work for myself one day, doing what though, that part I wasn’t sure of. However, when I worked on a project to design a range of stationery for Waterstones, it was this which sparked a new-born passion for designing stationery. After work, I took to designing my own cards as a hobby and a side project, setting up my Etsy store to display my cards. I initially aimed to design just a few hand-lettered cards and prints to sell online with a stylish, modern-English look to them. I felt over the moon when people actually showed an interest in my designs and I began to get orders through.”

From there, it grew. Ben began to design different products, such as tea towels and aprons; at the same time expanding his greetings card and print ranges.

This saw the demand for Old English Company’s products becoming greater. A year on Ben decided to leave the day job and pursue the ‘side-project’ full-time.

“I feel exceptionally fortunate to be doing what I love. I still remember the feeling I had when I received my first order after touching down from a long weekend in Barcelona with my girlfriend (now wife). Switching on my phone and receiving a notification saying I’d had my first sale. That buzzing feeling, it’s something I’ll never forget.”
