Take a Sneak Peek Behind the Scenes of Born Gifted.
Say hello to …
Jim Wilson from Born Gifted.
Tell us a little about yourself and your company?
I graduated from Southampton University with a PhD. in Marine Toxicology but decided it wasn’t for me! Born Gifted was born in 2003 and I haven’t looked back since. I think I always knew I wanted to run my own business and be in charge of my own destiny!
Born Gifted is a one-stop shop for awesome baby and children’s gifts, catering for births, Christenings, birthdays etc. The children and nursery sector was a no-brainer because no matter what, people keep having babies. Also, selling toys and gifts is more fun than selling batteries, socks or shoelaces!
Describe your typical working day …
Get out of bed, go fishing, go to the pub … ha ha I wish! No, my job varies from day to day depending on which hat I am wearing! I am in charge of updating the website, buying in new products, online marketing and advertising, SEO … you get the picture.
What is the best thing about your job?
Being the boss – I never did like being told what to do.
Who are your customers?
Mums, dads, aunties, uncles, grandparents, godparents … anyone who might need a gift for a young child.
What would you like to do next with the business?
World domination – I would like to take the business to the international market.
What tip would you give to someone starting their own business?
If things get tough don’t give up, sheer determination and patience will get you further than you think.
Your Products …
What is your favourite product in the shop?
This changes regularly, but currently I am loving the ‘Rise and Shine Sippy Cup’ which is branded to look like a popular coffee house chain logo. You can just picture the other Mums/Dads faces when they see your toddler sipping out of this!
What are the most popular products you’re currently stocking?
The Milestone Baby Card. A really novel idea which is proving really popular with new mums. There is a card to correspond to each milestone in baby’s first year. You write the date on the card and then include it in the milestone photo!
The Personalised First Day at School Book. With the new term approaching this product really appeals to anxious parents – it’s great for reassuring the pre-schoolers about to embark on their first year.
Are you introducing any new products this year?
Yes, we are constantly adding new products/ranges. This Winnie the Pooh range from Enesco will be live on the site soon.
What products would you like to introduce next?
I am keen to expand our range of personalised baby gifts – we are always on the look out for smaller innovative manufacturers/designers of bespoke products – so watch this space.
Your Inspiration …
What inspires your product selection?
I used to select products based purely because I liked them – that was a bad idea. Now my selection criteria in order of importance is … Is there a demand for it? Is it reasonable value for money? Is it a bit different from what everyone else is selling? Will it drive interest/PR? Will it look good on the website? Do I like it? We have always avoided going down the ‘just pink or blue’ route – colourful is good!
Who are your favourite card and gift designers?
Pebble make a range of Fair Trade knitted toys (shown below), which come in some fabulous designs – these are distributed by Best Years in the UK. Old favourites for us are Spaceform and Royal Selangor.
What other retailers do you admire?
Ocado – I do all my grocery shopping with them.
What business figures / brands inspire your business?
The ex-dragon Doug Richards, his ‘School For Startups’ seminars are worth going to.
Thank you Jim!
