Get A Sneak Peek Into the World of Eloise Hall
In today’s post we’re going behind the scenes of Eloise Hall, an independent greetings card and giftware business based in Somerset, England.
Launched in 2014, the company specialises in producing high quality cards and gifts, inspired by nature and decorated with elegant collages.
I first featured Eloise Hall greeting cards here on the blog back in 2015 but I’m delighted to catch up with Eloise again today. As Founder and Creative Director Eloise is uniquely placed to gives us a look behind the designs, sharing how she got started, what makes her indie business special and what we can look forward to in the coming months.

About the Business
What inspired you to start your company, Eloise Hall?
I began designing and creating artworks almost by accident. I’d just moved house and was looking for a piece that would brighten up a wall in my hall. A butterfly landed on the window and the flash of its wings inspired me to make a collage around butterflies. Visitors to our home – I was running a bespoke millinery business from my house at the time – were soon commissioning me to make collages for their own homes, and things quickly snowballed from there. In September 2014, the greetings card and stationery range was launched at Top Drawer and I’m delighted to say that our nature collection has gone down really well.
What can you tell us about your indie business?
Eloise Hall is run from a studio in Somerset and we’re passionate about producing beautiful products. There is a huge amount of care and detail that goes in to everything we make. We also pride ourselves on very good relationships with both our clients and our suppliers.
What’s your role in the business?
My role is founder and creative director. I love the variety this role brings, one moment I might be snipping pieces of beautiful chiogami paper creating a new design and then the next I could be talking to the important buyer before being interrupted by my three children bouncing in from school!
Are there other people in your business?
It’s small and perfectly formed here at Eloise Hall! Emma is our marketing and operations manager and Nikki sorts out our accounts. We work with a wonderful team of sales agents around the country and we have a fantastic fulfilment house who are way better at putting the right number of cards in the orders than I ever was!
We believe that independents offer an amazing combination of unique design and high quality. Do you agree?
We put a huge amount of time and energy into creating our products. The original artworks may take days to create and the care and attention with this makes a real difference to the end result. Whether it’s the luxury paper stock to found in our stationery range or the luxury natural wax carefully blended with the essential oils in our new scented candles, we select the finest materials to create our products.
You recently exhibited at the Spring Fair in Birmingham. Can you tell us about that?
Spring was a fantastic show for Eloise Hall. We make a real effort with our stand and create a nature themed installation with branches acting as shelves for our stationery range with our cards displayed on two large silver birch trees. When retailers visit our stand, they take a moment to escape from the hustle and bustle of the show and reconnect with the wonders of nature. For the show we increased our stationery offering adding many more designs and the very popular magnetic notepads. Our new botanical range of cards attracted top new retailers including Kew Gardens, the RSPB and Wisley Gardens.
You currently specialise in nature-inspired designs. What inspires you about this theme?
Nature is a wonderful sanctuary from the bustle of everyday life. Down here is Somerset, my studio is surrounded by fields and flowers and I love to watch how they change with the seasons. I’m also interested in the symbolic meaning behind each species, for example Koi Carp for fortune, two butterflies for love, butterflies in general for renewal and rebirth and dragonflies for living for the moment.
Which of the collection are the current bestsellers?
Our luxury boxed sets of cards are extremely popular, there’s a good selection of designs in the sets and they will suit almost any occasion.
What are your personal favourite products in your current range?
My favourite product is our brand new magnetic notepads. I love writing lists and these are just perfect to try and help me remember everything!
Design & Manufacture
Your designs incorporate beautiful, elegant collages, which are very unique. What can you tell us about what inspired the style?
As part of my millinery studies, I undertook a fashion illustration course and the style of my work is inspired by a technique studied on this course. Collage, which comes from the French word “collet” meaning “to glue is the art of creating something from a variety of different materials. My hand-cut collages depict native plants and animals as well as more exotic specimens from around the world. Influences include botanic drawings, English gardens, floristry and artists such as Matisse and Rob Ryan. I am interested in the meaning of things and symbolism from a wide variety of cultures and philosophies.
Eloise Hall cards and prints use high quality papers and bright, colourful decoration. What can you tell us about the materials and craftsmanship?
The finished product is extremely important and it must feel wonderful to receive or use. We think in detail about every element to make sure the end result is great. Whether it is the shade of cream for the paper, the size of the butterfly on a particular design or even the colour of the barcode, it has all been highly considered! We use luxury stock from one of the top quality paper mills in the UK for every element of our products including our envelopes.
Shopping & The Future
What do you think makes your products different?
Our products allow a moment of escape. Whether it’s a boost from the fluttery brilliance of butterflies or the botanical benefits of carefully blended essential oils, our exquisite collection will help you reconnect with the wonders of nature and regain your sense of wellbeing.
We love independents and think more people should be supporting them. Why do you think people should shop with independent businesses like yours?
Independents are the lifeblood of the UK. They provide an amazing array of individual and enticing products that we should be celebrating, enjoying and using. Britain’s small businesses are a creative and talented bunch, in fact we lead the world in terms of card design so lets be proud!
What can card senders and gift givers expect from Eloise Hall in the coming months?
We’ve been hard at work recently working on the launch of some beautiful home fragrance products in the form of some gorgeous natural candles and diffusers, its definitely smelling good in the studio! We’re working with one the leading natural perfumiers who has used the finest essential oils to create three heavenly fragrances. These will be launching in September alongside a gorgeous glittered Christmas range, many more botanical card designs and nine new art print designs. Look out for our rebrand including a new logo and website at that time too!
