Here you’ll find a quick rundown of industry awards for greetings and giftware businesses.

Awards are a great way to get your products noticed by the industry and potential buyers. Establishing your place in the industry and getting your business known for high quality and innovative design.

Look out for The Opportunity List published each month on the blog for notices of when these awards are open for entires.

UK Awards

The Gift of the Year

Next Awards Ceremony – Sunday 2nd February 2020.

Celebrating the best of the best in home and gift retailing, the Gift of the Year Awards are highly-respected industry accolades aimed at recognising the best new products in the industry.

With 20+ categories, The Gift of the Year celebrates the best in design and innovation.

Held annually, The Gift of the Year Awards are launched in July. with the competition closing in November.

Online judging creates a shortlist of products, ahead of a live judging panel in January.

The finalists are then announced in a ceremony held on the Sunday evening of Spring Fair.

The Henries

Next Awards Ceremony – Thursday 3rd October 2019.

The Henries is the biggest award ceremony in the UK’s greeting card industry. 

Named after Sir Henry Cole (who introduced the first commercially produced Christmas card over 160 years ago), The Henries were created by Progressive Greetings Worldwide magazine in 1996 as annual awards to shine the spotlight on greeting card designs. 

Award categories span a variety of greeting card categories from humour to cute; As well as special nods to seasonal cards and gift wrap. 

The majority of the awards are for card ranges that have either been launched in the preceding year or for new designs added to an existing range.

The Henries awards are open to all UK publishers big and small, with all the entries judged by an extensive panel of top retail buyers. 

The Henries winners are unveiled in October at a glitzy award ceremony in London. 

The Retas Awards

Next Awards Ceremony – TBC

Launched by Progressive Greetings magazine in 2005, The Retas aim to recognise the tremendous contribution made by retailers (big and small) to the success of the greeting card industry.

The summer event for the greeting card community, The Retas brings together the entire greeting card industry for an afternoon of celebration.

Awards recognise and celebrate the UK’s top independent and multiple greeting card retailers both regionally and nationally

There are also special awards for the newest generation of retailers as well as employees of outstanding excellence.

The Greats Gift Retailer Awards

Next Awards Ceremony – Wednesday 13th May 2020.

Celebrating their 18th year in 2020, The Greats Awards have become one of the most exciting and vibrant in the UK, bringing together the entire gift and home industry for an afternoon of celebration.

Much like their greeting card counterpart, The Retas, The Greats recognise and celebrate gift retailers regionally and nationally.

They also pay tribute to the top niche retailers and garden centres.

Special awards are also given to the industry’s outstanding retail employees.

The Greats Awards are owned and organised by Max Publishing and Progressive Gifts & Home Worldwide.

The Calies – UK Calendar Awards

Next Awards Ceremony – Tuesday 19th November 2020

Launched in 2017 by Max Publishing, owners of Progressive Greetings, with the support from the calendar and diary sector.

The Calies are the successors to the National Calendar Awards (NCAs), which in turn were a progression from the National Business Calendar Awards (which initially only recognised business calendars).

Warren Lomax, joint managing director of Max Publishing, which owns and organises The Calies commented

“The calendar and diaries sector has been close to our hearts for many, many years through Progressive Greetings and Progressive Calendars. We are delighted to be given the opportunity and support from calendar publishers large and small to build on the success of the NCAs by establishing The Calies is very credible annual accolades.”

The Calies aims to highlight a special product area that has stood the test of time.

The UK calendar market remains a vibrant sector – over 16 million calendars are sold every year in UK alone, with one in every three homes having at least one calendar on their walls

There are over 40 different calendar publishers in UK market alone, and that number does not include the companies who produce diaries and advents.

To celebrate the diversity, the award categories of The Calies 2019 encompass the whole spectrum of calendar, diary and Advent publishing, recognising excellence in the retail, B2B and charity sectors.

The Calies 2019 awards are for calendars and diaries dated for the year 2020.

The LOUIES – USA Greeting Card Awards

Next Awards Ceremony – TBC

Officially known as the International Greeting Card Awards Competition, the LOUIEs are named after Louis Prang, the German-born Boston lithographer credited with the birth of the U.S. Christmas card in the 1870s.

Launched by the American Greeting Card Association in 1988, the LOUIE Awards recognise outstanding greeting cards, invitations, and announcements marketed in the U.S. during the previous calendar year.

The competition is open to all domestic and foreign publishers of greeting cards, invitations, and/or announcements, and attracts hundreds of entries annually.
