Discover More About Homewares Designers Lomas&Lomas

Today we’re taking a look “behind the design” of interiors and homewares brand Lomas&Lomas.

The homewares industry works well with the giftware industry, providing cross-over products that double as excellent gifts for fans of interior design and cozy living.

We also often see homeware brands expanding their interiors range to include giftware items such as gift mugs and candles, so I believe it’s always worth keeping our eyes peeled for exciting homeware brands like Lomas&Lomas that offer unique “present potential” for buyers.

To get a closer look at this intriguing design-led business, one half of the duo behind the brand, Sharon Lomas, answered a few questions about their collection, inspiration, manufacturing and more.

So without further ado, let’s get to know Lomas&Lomas…

The Lomas&Lomas Business

Tell us a little about your company…

Lomas&Lomas began when we wanted unique interiors for our own home we started to design our own surface patterns to create wallpaper & cushions. After very positive feedback from friends & family, we spent a year developing designs and testing our products at artisan markets, local interiors events & fairs.

We are a husband & wife design team, Garry is a landscape & wildlife photographer and the natural world really inspired both of us. We wanted our designs to be truly unique so we take shapes from Garry’s work and together create repeating patterns with them.

Our range now includes fabrics, wallpapers – from which I hand make cushions, lampshades in our Derbyshire studio.

In 2015 we opened our first gallery & interiors store in the Peak District where I also make a range of handmade candles & diffusers. We have extended our range to include aprons, tea towels, oven gloves, table mats & coasters and china mugs.

What is your role in the business?

Garry & I design together but it is my role to hand make many of our items or source local craftspeople who help create some of our range.

I also run the gallery and am responsible for our social media & marketing. The best thing about my job is the variety and seeing just what pattern we can create from a simple photograph.

Is there anyone else in the team? Tell us about them.

Garry is the talent behind the original images that we use to create our design. Garry is also the artwork whiz who brings our visions for patterns to life.

What is a typical day like in your business?

What makes our business special to me is there is no typical day. One day I can spend sewing up cushion orders or creating lampshades, another day could be making candles & diffusers and of course I never know who will visit the gallery – we have some interesting characters that drop by so no one day is ever truly the same as the last.

What makes your workplace special?

What makes our workplace truly special is our wonderful inspiring location. Our gallery/studio is based in the pretty Derbyshire village of Hayfield– right on the edge of Kinder Scout and the wild and rugged landscape of the Dark Peak District.

Lomas&Lomas Products.

What is your personal favourite product in your collection?

My personal favourite design is the Sparrow, perhaps because it was one of the first designs we created. Seeing it develop across different ranges of soft furnishings, kitchen textiles and homewares has been an especially proud moment.

What are the most popular products in your current range?

Sparrow & Heron remain our two most popular designs, people just love birds!

What new products do you have planned for the future?

This year we are planning to launch a new range of stationery beginning with journals & notebooks and in Autumn we hope to launch a range of scarves featuring our designs.

Can you tell us anything about what you are working on at the moment?

We are always thinking about new designs, at present we are working on developing a series of designs inspired by the abstracts of nature but these will likely be for launch in 2018.

What is it like seeing your products in shops?

It’s a weird feeling – seeing a product or design that you have spent so many hours working on and looking at, for sale in a shop. You get so used to seeing the design but when people see it for the first time and like it, it’s always a bit of a rush.

I love hearing peoples reactions to our products, which is why I love being able to speak directly to our customers in our own gallery.

Obviously, the internet is hugely important to any business but nothing substitutes actual human contact, seeing & hearing peoples reactions, especially when I explain the story behind the designs.

Lomas&Lomas Inspiration.

What inspires which product lines you create?

Our inspiration for our product lines lies with the natural world and how we can translate this theme into interiors & homeware products. I have always loved bold graphic patterns & prints and have always admired the work or Orla Kiely & Timerous Beasties. What I love most about this style is how one simple shape can be transformed into a pattern.

What influences the look of your collection?

We do keep a keen eye on fashion trends & colours but really its nature that truly inspires us.

One of the most popular new designs has been our Great Tit pattern. A simple repeating silhouette image of a Great Tit sat on a ball of moss. The four colours we used to create the pattern are all colours found in the bird’s feathers.

Is there any other card or gift designers/brands that you admire?

I do admire I like Birds, they have bright fun designs and share our love of birds. I have always been a huge fan of Jo Malone – like her, I started making candles on my kitchen table.

Manufacturing & Producing the Lomas&Lomas Range.

What can you tell us about how your products are made. Do you make anything by hand or work with specialty craftsmen?

I hand make our range of cushions, lampshades, candles & diffusers in our Derbyshire studio. I print our china mugs too and until recently I was printing the tablemats & coasters but due to demand these are now created for us by a family business in Lincolnshire.

Our range of kitchen textiles is handmade by a local team in Cheshire who also print our fabrics & wallpapers. It is very important to us to use local businesses wherever possible and certainly for all our products to be made in the UK.

Do the materials have Eco-friendly credentials?

Our candles are made using natural soy wax, which is a naturally sustainable wax product made from soya beans created without petroleum or chemicals.

The Future for Lomas&Lomas.

Where do you dream of seeing your products next?

We would love to develop a network of stockists in independent stores & galleries across the UK who share our ethos for offering quality, unique UK handmade goods to their customers.

We would also love to work with big names such as Habitat or John Lewis, who wouldn’t!
