Card & Gift Company Takes Collection to the People (& their Pets).

Tomorrow night designer Rose Hill is undertaking her 2nd ‘Make Your Pet Famous’ live event of the year.

Building on her hugely popular range of ‘Make Your Pet Famous’ personalised art, the live event sees Rose getting out of her studio and taking her collection of greetings cards and giftware to a pop-up location in an independent shop or gallery.

The Debut Event

The first ‘Make Your Pet Famous’ live event was held back in March at Aria in Islington, London.

The event saw over 75 dogs, 2 cats, 100 or more people lining up for a live photoshoot experience in Aria’s custom-made photo booth; with complimentary photography for pets and made-to-order pet portraits in Rose’s signature pop art style.

The Prosecco and Pawsecco (sponsored by Woof & Brew) flowed and everyone had an amazing time. London lifestyle blog (for the urban dog), The Dog Vine commented…

“We really enjoyed coming along to the #makeyourpetfamous event in the hip home decor store Aria. This was the perfect place to showcase Rose’s fabulous and unique pet portraits and to meet some of the famous four-legged faces of those portraits as well as many other London dogs who we know from social media. Look forward to seeing more familiar faces in the #makeyourpetfamous wall of fame”

Alongside the pet portraits, Rose also had a selection of cards, notebooks and three sets of stickers in collaboration with the fab Made of Sundays (link below) on sale.

The event also featured the launch of a brand new pet accessory collection designed exclusively for Aria. The new range for pets was modelled by Instagram star Eroc the skateboarding dog and included one of a kind bow ties and neckerchiefs handmade by Rose on digitally printed fabric using her statement geometric prints.

With so much to see and do it’s no surprise that the live event was a huge success. Visitor Anne Lim (attending with her Weimaraner dog Skylar) said…

“Whilst London was covered in heavy snowfall in freezing temperatures, things were heating up at Aria’s showroom. Skylar and I were in for a treat from the moment we arrived at #MakeYourPetFamous event. The event space was filled with vibrant and colourful illustration pieces by Rose Hill Designs of pet portraits. We treated ourselves to the complimentary photoshoot and indulged in some Prosecco (Pawsecco, in Skylar’s case..) which was generously provided by sponsors for the evening. We had a chance to meet the talented artist behind the illustrations, Rose. It is undeniable she is passionate about our pets and takes the time to understand the bond with their owners which is translated and beautifully captured in her art, providing each artwork its own unique identity to deliver a strong emotional connection.”

Behind the Scenes Q&A

To get a better idea of how a greetings card range turned into a live event I posed some questions to Rose, for an exclusive behind the scenes look at Make Your Pet Famous Live.

Who’s idea was it to turn ‘Make Your Pet Famous’ into a live event?

It was a combination of myself and Carl the manager of Aria. Make Your Pet Famous is a range that happened organically from before my first trade show in Sept 2013 I had a client commission me to draw their sister’s dog. At the same time, I had already drawn 11 dogs and needed one more for my very first trade show at Top Drawer. I asked her if I could use Lola in my collection which she was super excited to. At Top Drawer when I explained to a customer that Lola was a real dog, that customer eagerly wanted their dog illustrated and I said I would love to make Brenin their dog famous. It then happened again with Frankie. So the Make Your Pet Famous range was born. When chatting to Carl he loved the idea of all these dogs hanging out at Aria (a super cool interiors store) so we thought up having a photo booth and I suggested I make lots of fun accessories like my illustration.

How did you get to know Carl?

Carl and I met about five years before when I was buying a beautiful rug from Aria. Later I went to another very cool event at Aria Walala in the house for London Design Week and that’s when a spark started. Carl had seen me at trade shows and was always popping by my stand. About a year before we were talking seriously about what we could do and make happen.

What first attracted you to the Aria shop?

I lived in Islington since I was born (apart from when I lived in NYC and Australia) and always walked passed the shop – I LOVED this shop. It always had so many cool things inside like Johnathan Adler vases, AMAZING lighting from Tom Dixon, beautifully textured rugs and fab sofas. I instantly knew I wanted to work with them

Would you like to do another live event with Aria or other shops?

YES DEFINITELY. I would love to!! I am actually in talks with a lovely shop in Japan and we will be doing something in Spring 2019. I seriously can’t wait!! I would love to do loads more – it was an amazing event, such a successful evening everyone absolutely loved it!!

Are the new dogs’ accessories and stickers a one-off or are they part of the range now?

I absolutely loved making the bow ties and neckerchiefs, I even got a new sewing machine for my birthday especially to make them. Each design is a one-off which was ace as an exclusive for Aria, they were very successful. I think I will do another set for another exclusive range.

Yes, the stickers are a licence with the wonderful Made of Sundays so they are currently selling them too.

Looking back, what went well?

It was super successful and I was so pleased we did it!! It was a wonderful atmosphere, and I was super happy with the way it looked (exactly how I planned it) and lots of people came and had fun!!

& what would you change?

I would have arrived there earlier before it started as I had a couple of finishing touches, so I arrived there at 4 pm for a 5.30 pm start. Everyone was so excited they came early and I didn’t manage to get a photo of me in my trademark face dress in front of the display.

The other thing I would have done was move the cards, notebooks, stickers and accessories to the main part of the shop as they were tucked away behind the photo booth so people didn’t get to see them that much.
