Take a Look Behind the Scenes of Melinda Mulcahy
Say hello to …
Melinda from Melinda Mulcahy
Tell us a little about yourself and your company?
I work from my jewellery studio and retail shop in the pretty market town of Cowbridge, South Wales. The business has been online for over 10 years now and I make all the jewellery myself. In fact I do pretty much everything in the business myself.
Describe your typical working day …
Walk my smiley Dalmatian (Rosie) and children to school before opening the studio. Rosie comes with me to help greet customers! After I set all the jewellery out, I can start making orders in between serving customers, ordering supplies etc. When I get home I photograph and upload all my new creations on the various websites I feed including my own.
What is the best thing about your job?
I love designing all things and at the moment I’m working on introducing a whole new range of homewares.
Do you use any specialist techniques to create your products?
I have a kiln which fires the fine silver product and some soldering equipment, but actually my most utilised tools are simple wire working tools and cutters.
What would you like to do next with the businesss?
As I’ve been online for 10 years, I recently opened a physical retail shop and I’m enjoying building this up from scratch.
strong>What ‘top tip’ would you give to someone starting a business?
Investigate if there is a need for the product.
Your Products …
What is your personal favourite product in your collection?
I love wire working and take great pride in wiring beautiful gemstones and pearls. I also fire wire black diamonds onto .3mm wire for private clients and I love the way they sparkle. But I also love making personal messages for customers. I had one customer propose with a love letter in morse code and another to ask to meet at a particular place and time so these personal messages really inspire to me.
What are the most popular products in your range?
I am best known for the personalised plectrums and I have received a lot of coverage in the press for these in various forms. However, the beanie’s on bangles and the beanie collection has to be a close second, along with the Sweet Petite bracelets.
Are you working on any new products at the moment?
I’m always working on new products and at the moment I’m looking at new product ranges to establish and whole new line of homewares.
What products do you want to introduce in the next year?
This year I’m introducing the EAT PLAY LOVE series. As the market moves so quickly, next year is a little to early to plan for yet. But as everyone loves my Dalmatian, I think she will the focus of my next project.
Your Inspiration …
What inspired you to start your business?
I went to a jewellery viewing and couldn’t believe how badly they were made so I thought I could do better myself.
What inspires your products?
I love the arts, dance, architecture and even the slightest movement of a leaf can get my imagination flowing. Also perception plays a part. I travel regularly so exploring new cultures is a great inspiration.
What other card and gift designers do you admire?
Actually I don’t have much time to explore what else is available but I do keep my eye on the fashion world which also inspires me. I love watching the fashion catwalk during the various city fashion weeks.
What business figures / brands inspire your business?
I like watching new brands break into the business and see them flourish and this is a great inspiration to me.
Thank you Melinda!
