Discover the Colourful World of Paper Sheriff.

For our latest industry interview taking a look “behind the design” of a unique card or gift business we’re catching up with Adam Holcroft, the designer and owner at Paper Sheriff.

If you’re familiar with the blog you will have previously seen Adam’s greeting card designs featured in the recent Mother’s Day card pick and the selection of top Thank You Card Packs. The Paper Sheriff designs are fresh, bold and hugely appealing for a host of card-giving occasions; let’s find out more about what’s going on behind the scenes of this exciting card brand.

Behind the Design with Paper Sheriff.

Tell us a little about your company.

I started Paper Sheriff as a hobby business in November 2013 but didn’t really put too much effort into it until I launched our Etsy shop in August 2014. At that point I moved away from more crafty projects using buttons and scrapbook paper to design-led greetings cards, prints and gift tags. Now our USP is bright, bold and colourful design with a dash of Northern charm.

What is your role in the business?

I like to call myself the CEO, Chief Of Everything! I do literally everything in the business from thinking up new designs and creating them in Adobe Illustrator to printing, cutting, packing and even finances. I love being self-employed as it means I can go at my own pace without any pressures from a big boss and as I suffer with anxiety this help immensely. The best thing is that as long as the work gets done, I can choose when and where I work!

Is there anyone else in the team? Tell us about them.

Nobody else, although my family do sometimes help with post runs!

What is a typical day like at your business?

Most days are spent printing, packing up and posting orders from the previous day and then working on new ideas and developing existing ideas. I’m sure I’m not the only one who has a hundred different new ideas on the go at once! I work from my little bedroom at my family home where I have a desk and PC set up. It’s cosy but I hope to move into my own office one day.

The Inspiration Behind Paper Sheriff.

What inspires which product lines you create?

I’m a big fan of the ‘Mid-Century Modern’ (MCM) aesthetic with its bold colours and clean lines. I’m hoping to create a set of MCM inspired prints at some point. I’m also inspired to create cards based on pop culture such as my ‘Tinder’ and ‘Celebrity Valentine’s’ cards. I think if you can say what someone’s thinking in your designs then you’re onto a winner.

Tell us about your design style.

First and foremost colour. If it’s not colourful then it’s turned away at the door so to speak. I have a huge board on Pinterest dedicated to colour schemes that I browse through for inspiration every time I’m designing something new.

Are there any other card or gift designers that you admire?

So many! Emily McDowell has been a recent phenomenon, her Empathy cards are so clever, I definitely see her as a big source of inspiration. Also other Etsy UK sellers such as Becka Griffin, Clara & Macy, Newton and the Apple, Pygmy Cloud … I could go on forever!

What is your personal favourite product in your collection?

I have to say I’m still in love with my Northern Christmas cards which I first created in 2014. They were some of the first cards I designed and they still get a lot of love at Christmas.

What are the most popular products in your current range?

I was thrilled with the success of the ‘Palentine’s’ cards I introduced this year and our ‘Bloody Brilliant’ Mother’s Day cards got a redesign and continues to be a best seller all year round.

What new products do you have planned for the future?

I’m currently working on expanding our Colour Block range which at present includes the ‘Cheers’, ‘Nice One’ and ‘Thank You Sooo Much’ cards. We’ll have everything from new baby cards to get well soon and congratulations cards. I’m also planning a rainbow range for Christmas, there’s nothing like planning ahead!

What is it like seeing your products in shops?

We’re not in any shops yet but one of this year’s big goals is to create a wholesale catalogue and hopefully make our first appearance in independent stores around the UK.

What can you tell us about how your products are made?

I buy in FSC Accredited card and from there everything is done by me. I design, print, cut, score and package every Paper Sheriff product. I don’t think people realise how much time and effort goes into just one greeting card!

Do you use any specialist techniques or equipment?

I use Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop as well as my Wacom graphics tablet when designing.

The Future for Paper Sheriff.

What would you like to do next with the business?

The business is always growing and I’m bursting with new ideas so expanding our product range is definitely a big one for this year. As well as cards and prints I want to branch out into stickers, notebooks and tote bags. I’ll also be attending lots more markets this year as that’s a great way to get feedback and see what sells in person rather than online.

Where do you dream of seeing your products next?

As mentioned previously one of my big goals for this year is to get Paper Sheriff stocked in some local independent shops and from there hopefully branch out across the UK. If you’re a small shop owner and like what you see, come say howdy at [email protected]!

Thank You Adam!

Now you’ve read the interview, it’s time to check out the collection and visit Paper Sheriff’s Etsy shop.
