Super Sculptures to Spread a Little Joy
Something a little bit different today … a few weeks ago I saw these magical sculptures at the 2010 British Craft Trade Fair in Harrogate. Each is lovingly crafted with lots of hard work and buckets of imagination by artist Paul Smith. I was really impressed and thought I would pester Paul for some pictures to show you here.
Paul lives and works in the Peak District where he creates his dream-like sculptures. The figures are re-interpretations of fairy tales and fables; each with their own unique twist … Little Red Riding might be found, but in this world she’s a confident femme-fatale, not a victim.
Each piece is richly detailed with a strong visual style, sweeping curves and unmistakable charm. While Paul does work in a variety of materials, the sculptures I have chosen to shown here today are all ceramics. Each is individually moulded by hand and sponge-decorated with oxides, stains and glazes.
All of the sculptures shown on today’s post are limited editions, signed and dated, with either 12 or 24 in existence. Prices start at £795 and range up to £2,225 for the pieces shown today.
To find out more and pick up a sculpture of your very own go along to the Paul Smith Sculptures website. Alternatively, go along to Paul’s solo show ‘Supernature’ running 17 September – 10 October 2010 at Cambridge Contemporary Art.
