Take a Sneak Peek Behind the Scenes of Postmark
Say hello to …
Jenny from Postmark, Balham, London.
Tell us a little about yourself and your company?
Hi! My name is Jenny and I have been the manager of Postmark’s Balham branch since 2006! We are a small, award-winning independent card shop. We first opened our first branch in 2004 with our second branch following in 2008. We’re a family-run business offering a large range of design-led greetings cards.
Describe your typical working day …
A typical day starts with opening up the shop, making sure it is stocked and ready to go. Serving customers and helping them with any queries they have. Sorting through any orders that come into the shop, ticking them off, ensuring what we have ordered has been sent and dealing with any discrepancies. There are always two people in the shop everyday except Sundays … so once they come in I will deal with any web orders that have come through, picking/packing and sending out. At the end of the day, I will cash up and make sure the shop is fully stocked for the next day.
What is the best thing about your job?
I love our regular customers, obviously working in a small independent business you build up a rapport with the locals. Obviously I love cards, especially the funny ones. The best bit of the job though, is finding that perfect card for someone and knowing that you have made their day.
Who are your customers?
Our customers vary, from young and old. We get a lot of yummy mummies being in Balham, which is nice as they become regulars you get to know their children. We are really lucky to have a wide spectrum of customers.
Your products …
What is your favourite product in the shop?
Frankie Whistle cards. Very funny
What are the most popular products you’re currently stocking?
Humorous cards are our most popular product and thank you notes, such as Peter Pauper, shown below.
What products are you introducing this year?
We are continuously introducing new cards, one favourite is Jelly Bomb, a new range realised by Urban Graphic, aimed towards children. The 12 new designs feature fun dinosaurs and super cool animals.
What plans do have for your business in the next year?
We hope to put more time and effort into our website. Hopefully Christmas will give it a good push. Maybe a third shop, we are always keeping our eyes peeled for a good location.
Your inspiration …
What inspires your product selection?
New and interesting designs. Cards which are quirky and original.
Who are your favourite card and gift designers?
Favourite card designer is Frankie Whistle and for gifts I would have to say Jellycat as they are the only gifts we sell!
Thank you Jenny!
