Liam Jennings & Josh Blackburn from Regal Gentleman.
Tell us a little about yourself and your company?
LJ – I am 21 years old and Regal Gentleman is my first business venture. Regal Gentleman is an online male grooming retailer that aims to provide high quality products and service to males. I love business & football. I’m an Arsenal fan!
JB – I am also 21 years old and would have to say a happy go lucky kind of guy if I had to sum myself up. I like to keep active so enjoy going gym and playing football with my friends and am sadly a big West Ham supporter.
What is the best thing about your job?
LJ – The best thing about my job is I’m the boss. The decisions are our own. Every day is a new day and I learn something new, it’s a huge learning curve. Working every day with my best friend is great too!
JB – Doing something that you enjoy doing.
Who are your customers?
LJ – Our customers are typically males aged between 19-45. The industry is a typically misunderstood market with some excellent brands. We aim to put the customers and these excellent brands at the forefront of everything we do.
What would you like to do next with the business?
LJ – Now that would be telling, but we do have some excellent plans for driving Regal Gentleman to the top of the male grooming tree.
What tip would you give to someone starting their own business?
LJ – Plan and do it. A great business can be anything. Just as long as you have the right plan in place and know where you want to get to. Also it’s ok, you can admit you can’t do everything yourself. Surround yourself with people who are strong in their specific field. It doesn’t matter what your background, age, race, sex is, anyone can achieve in business with the right idea, the right plan and the right people around them.
JB – The best tip I can give people that want to start a business is exactly that … START A BUSINESS … Just take a risk and leap into it. I think if you have an idea that can make a positive difference and bring value to the marketplace then you have a good basis to work from.
If you are stuck for ideas the best thing to do is note down every idea you get and every week review each one, sooner or later you will find one that switches on the light bulb.
Your Products …
What is your favourite product in the shop?
LJ – Personally, the Taylor of Old Bond Street Sandalwood Shaving Cream (shown at the top of the post). I’m a huge fan of sandalwood as a scent. Very traditional. And it helps to give you a great shave and leaves the skin feeling fresh & ready to go. But we don’t stock any product unless it’s great. All tried and tested first hand by myself and Josh.
JB – I could easily sit nicely on the fence with this one and say they are all the best but if I had to pick my personal favourite it would have to be the SOTHYS Age-Hydrating Fluid. It’s probably the best moisturiser I have used, it suits my skin type perfectly.
What are the most popular products you’re currently stocking?
JB – The Mr Natty Face Forest Soap Beard Shampoo has been very popular with the bearded gentleman. Also, the Bluebeards Revenge Shaving Cream has proved to be popular. This product actually reduces the speed of hair growth, so if you don’t like shaving then this is the one for you.
Are you introducing any new products this year?
LJ – We do have many new products coming in this year to boost our already excellent product lines. Our next products in are hair products from the brilliant Joe Grooming at the end of this month, as well as a product from Jack Black that is perfect for gym goers.
What products would you like to introduce next?
LJ – We have a long list of brands and products that we are looking to introduce. My house is filled up with samples. We hope to launch a few more exclusives, like the Sothy’s Homme range which is currently only available at Regal Gentleman.
JB- Personally I am looking forward to adding ‘Scents’ in the next year, aftershaves etc. I am a big fan of a good aftershave and there are so many great brands out there that are still under the radar.
Your Inspiration …
What inspires your product selection?
LJ – As I said earlier, each product is tried and tested. Only the best are selected for the site. Products from high end salons, that we’ve used were the original inspiration, but now we seek out brands that fit into our image through extensive research on social media and online.
JB – I think it’s also a case of wanting to provide the best for our customers. New trends are also very much a part of inspiring product selections and that’s the fun part. Both Liam and I have seen the Frank Sinatra era coming back slowly, and that will inspire new products especially in the hair category.
What other retailers do you admire?
LJ – Mr Porter. They have created one of the best, most simple sites around for men. They have managed to turn this into a community of the gentlemen, befitting the image that we wanted to create.
JB – As Liam said, I personally love Mr Porter’s brand also, I think it is so elegant and sophisticated, one that we inspire to be like, that is for sure. You would also have to say ASOS, what they have achieved in the last few years has been brilliant and something that should definitely be respected.
What business figures inspire your business?
LJ – Richard Branson. For me he is the best. The way he continuously thinks up new ideas and strives to achieve more and innovate, is the way that more people in business should be. I don’t believe you should get comfortable with what you have, you should always look to do more and be better.
JB – I would say the need to make men’s life easier and making then feel more confident inspired the business. If you was to ask who inspired me to get into business it would have to be Sir Richard Branson as well, he is the perfect example that you can have fun with business.
