Take A Look Behind the Scenes of Tori
Say hello to …
Victoria Coppock from Tori.
Tell us a little about yourself and your company?
I am a fashion and textiles design graduate and I have always been into the art and design of anything, from graphics, interiors and fashion to fine art. I have always wanted to start my own business that allowed me to do something creative for a living. In more recent years I have taken a particular interest in the gift market and always find myself drawn to gift and craft shops. I especially love gift ideas that become keepsakes or are a fun and clever way to express people’s thoughts to a loved one.
My partner and I realised starting our own business could become a reality after researching the idea a little more. I began working on a product range and my partner built the website from scratch so we could have complete control over the design and look of the site. I have started with print gifts as I have so many different ideas for prints that would make lovely, thoughtful and personalised gifts but I am looking forward to introduce a wider range of products soon.
Describe your typical working day …
My typical working day includes working through my never ending list of ideas for new prints. I will usually start a print with some sketches, then scan them into the computer and work with them on Photoshop and Illustrator to build on the original sketches. Using research I have already done into colour combinations and layout I try several different versions of the print until I am happy with one design. I will also spend some time of my day researching new ideas and possibilities.
What is the best thing about your job?
The best thing about my job is getting to be creative every day and seeing my ideas develop into a finished product which is very rewarding.
Do you use any specialist techniques?
I use a lot of computer design programs along with traditional techniques. I have done a lot of paper cutting in the past which I would love to add to our product range in the future as hand cut artwork and prints developed from the artwork.
What would you like to do next with the business?
I have got a background in textiles so I am working on creating some textile pieces for our website at the moment including wedding decoration pieces such as table runners, bunting etc. I would also love to introduce the hand cut artwork in the near future.
What tip would you give to someone starting a business?
Just go for it, you don’t have to put a lot of money into a business to get going you can start small and build on it. Using the internet and social networking means it is possible for anyone to start and promote their own business.
Your Products …
What is your personal favourite product in your collection?
My favourite products are the ‘Loves’ print and the ‘Baby Date’ print because of the colourful and striking design.
What are the most popular products in your range?
Our most popular products are the range of wedding prints including: ‘Wedding speech’, ‘Wedding Vows’ and our ‘First Dance’ song lyrics print. Our Santa Sack and Personalised Santa Sack were also big sellers at Christmas.
Are you working on any new products at the moment?
I am currently working on a range on classic ‘Fairytale’ prints for children, combining illustrations with text from the story.
What products do you want to introduce next?
I would like to introduce some textile products to utilize my sewing skills and textile background including, personalised baby/ children’s bunting, cushions, and wedding decorations. I would also like to launch a range of hand cut artwork and prints as mentioned before.
Your Inspiration …
What inspired you to start your business?
My desire to do something creative everyday and seeing how many people were doing it on the internet. I thought I could do it better and I had a lot of new ideas that I hadn’t seen before and I thought people would love.
What inspires your products?
My own family and friends. I love giving gifts and I am always trying to find the perfect gift for family or friends and I think a lot of my prints make perfect gifts as they are personal, have a lot of thought behind them and are something a bit different. I also like looking at books, craft magazines, the internet, gift shops, anything around me.
What other card & gift designers do you admire?
The Bright Side because I think their ideas are clever and the funny text on products makes them stand out; I really enjoy looking at all of their products when I am in a shop. Five Dollar Shake make the prettiest looking cards and they really are something special, which I don’t think anyone else does quite as well. Mimi and Mae create beautiful hand cut pictures
What business brands inspire your business?
